Nutrition: Do You Need Supplements?

A supplement is exactly what the name says: something that adds to your diet. It can help fill gaps, but it isn't a replacement for real food.

Food, sleep and movement first

Supplements second

Unless a doctor has prescribed one, supplements are only worth thinking about once you're eating well, sleeping well and moving regularly. Without those in place, no supplement will make up the difference.

Once the basics are covered, look at where your diet falls short. That's where a supplement can help.

Two with strong research

  • Protein powder: a convenient way to reach your protein target on days when food falls short. It's food in powder form.
  • Creatine: one of the most researched supplements there is. It can help you train a little harder in short, intense efforts like lifting. Research also supports its safety for healthy adults.
Remember

Supplements add to a good diet. They can't replace one.

General information, not medical advice. If you've an existing condition or you're unsure about taking a supplement, speak to a qualified professional first.
