Nutrition: What Are Macronutrients?

Macronutrients are the three main nutrients your body needs in large amounts: carbohydrates, protein and fats.

Every macro has a job

All three play a vital role in how your body works

All three are essential. None of them should be feared or cut out of your diet.

Carbohydrates

  • Your main source of energy, for your brain and your muscles.
  • Broken down into glucose, which your body uses for fuel.
  • Adjust how much you eat to match how active you are.
  • Sources: rice, oats, potatoes and fruit.

Protein

  • Builds and repairs your muscles.
  • Supports your immune system.
  • Helps you feel full after a meal.
  • Aim for about 1g per lb of your goal bodyweight, or just over 2g per kg.
  • Sources: meat, fish, eggs, dairy and beans.

Fats

  • Essential for your hormones, absorbing nutrients and keeping your brain healthy.
  • Your body's long-term energy store.
  • Sources: olive oil, nuts, avocado and oily fish.
Remember

All three macronutrients play a vital role. Build your meals around a balance of carbs, protein and healthy fats.
