Nutrition: What Are Micronutrients?

Micronutrients are the vitamins and minerals your body needs in smaller amounts. They're still essential, helping your body function properly and keeping you feeling good.

A varied diet of whole foods gives you most of what you need

Your body needs many different micronutrients to function at its best. Different foods carry different ones, so no single food covers them all.

That's impossible with a diet built on ultra-processed food, which is made to taste good and last on the shelf rather than to nourish you.

A few examples

  • Iron: helps your red blood cells carry oxygen around your body.
Sources: red meat, eggs, beans and leafy greens.
  • Calcium: keeps your bones strong.
    Sources: milk, yoghurt and cheese.
  • Vitamin D: helps your body absorb calcium.
Your skin makes it with the help of sunlight.
  • Vitamin C: supports your immune system and helps your body absorb iron.
Sources: oranges, kiwi fruit and capsicum.
Remember

You don't need to know every vitamin. Eat a wide range of whole foods and you'll cover most of what your body needs.
