Movement: How Much Do You Need?

Forty-five to sixty minutes of movement a day is all that's required to make a big difference.

The way to get there is to set a floor rather than a target.

Set a floor, not a target

A floor is the smallest amount you'd still manage on your worst day. Not a good day, and not an average one. The day where work is a pain, someone's sick, and nothing goes the way you planned it.

A target you hit half the time tells you you're falling short. A floor you hit every day tells you the opposite.

Floors worth having

  • A five minute walk after your biggest meal.
  • The stairs instead of the lift, every time.
  • A short walk at some point in every lunch break.
  • Getting off the bus or train one stop early.

Pick one and hold it until it stops feeling like a decision, then add another. Stack a few of those and forty-five to sixty minutes becomes a description of a normal day rather than a target you're chasing.

Remember

Set the smallest amount you'd still do on your worst day, and never miss it. Everything above that is a bonus.
