Consistency: Restarting After a Break

Whether it's a couple of missed days or a few months away, getting back into your routine can feel harder than starting the first time.

Start again without overwhelming yourself

After a break, it's tempting to come back with a bang, or to do extra to make up for the time off. That usually leads to soreness, burnout or injury. Easing back in is what gets you into a routine that lasts.

How to restart

  • Restart one or two basics first, rather than everything at once.
  • Ease back in, with lighter weights or shorter sessions than before.
  • Build up gradually over the next few sessions, or weeks after a longer break.
Remember

You're not starting over. You're starting again, from where you are now.

General information, not medical advice. If you're coming back from an injury or illness, or you're unsure about starting again, speak to a qualified professional first.
