Nutrition: The 80/20 Rule

You don't need to eat perfectly to be healthy. Aim for most of your food to be whole and nutritious, and leave room for life.

80% whole foods

20% whatever you enjoy

There's nothing to weigh, track or count here. Across a normal week, most of what you eat is whole and nutritious, and some of it isn't. Both parts are meant to be there.

What the 20% is for

  • Dinner out with friends.
  • Birthdays, holidays and the odd takeaway.
  • The foods you grew up with and still love.

Why the flexibility matters

Cut out everything you enjoy and you'll dread every meal. Most people manage a few weeks of that before dropping the whole thing, and the strict version rarely comes back.

Remember

Flexibility in your diet allows you to stick to it long term. It won't be worth it if you're miserable!

General information, not medical advice. If you've an existing condition or you're unsure about changing the way you eat, speak to a qualified professional first.
