Cardio: Finding Something You Enjoy

Most people choose their cardio based on what they think they should be doing. Very few choose it based on what they'd actually enjoy.

Enjoyment matters more than the activity

Running, cycling, swimming, a dance class, a sport with friends. For general health, they all do the job. So choose the one you'd look forward to, rather than the one you'd have to talk yourself into.

The one exception is training for something specific. If you've entered a 10k or a cycling event, your training should look like that event.

How hard it should feel

Most of your cardio should be at a pace where you can still hold a conversation. Your heart and lungs still get stronger at that pace. You'll also enjoy it far more.

On some days you'll want to push yourself harder. That's good too. Enjoying it doesn't mean it's never hard. It means you feel good during it and better afterwards.

Remember

Cardio should be fun! Don't make it a chore.

General information, not medical advice. If you've an existing condition or you're unsure about starting something new, speak to a qualified professional first.
