Strength: What Are You Training For?

Before choosing a program or a gym, it's worth answering one question. What do you actually want your training to do for you?

You get better at what you train

Which program you pick matters far less than knowing what you're training for. Your body adapts to what you ask of it. Train towards your goal and that's where you'll see progress.

Without a goal, it's hard to tell whether a session is worth doing. Your training has no direction, so it's easy to end up doing a bit of everything without really improving at any of it.

Any goal counts

  • Getting a shoulder working properly again.
  • Staying mobile as you get older.
  • Keeping up with your kids.
  • Finishing a 10k, or being fit enough for a hiking trip.
  • Getting stronger for its own sake.

Training with intent

Once you know your goal, every session has a purpose. Instead of doing whatever you feel like on the day, you're doing the work that moves you towards something you care about.

That's what training with intent means. It makes your sessions more satisfying too, because you can see where each one is taking you.

Remember

Decide what you're training for first. Everything else follows from that.

General information, not medical advice. If you've an existing condition or injury, or you're unsure about starting something new, speak to a qualified professional first.
