Consistency: Playing the Long Game

Most people judge their progress over a few weeks. The changes that really matter take years to build.

Think in years, not weeks

People tend to overestimate what they can change in one year and underestimate what they can change in five. A year of trying to overhaul everything at once usually ends in burnout. Five years of doing the basics well changes almost everything.

70% of people who reach a fitness goal lose that progress within a year. Most of the time, the goal was reached in a way nobody could keep up.

What this changes

Thinking in years takes the pressure off any single week. A bad fortnight is a very small part of five years. So is a holiday, an illness or a busy month at work.

It also changes what's worth doing. Pick the version you'd be happy doing for years over the version that gets results fastest.

  • A way of eating you enjoy over the fastest diet.
  • Training you look forward to over a punishing plan.
  • A daily walk over a short burst of intense sessions.
Remember

The results that last come from doing the basics well, for years.
