Cardio: Does the Type of Cardio Matter?
Like strength training, your body adapts to the type of cardio you do. How much that matters depends on what you're training for.
The fitness you build in one type of cardio carries over to others
Your heart and lungs do the same job whether you're running, cycling or swimming. Get fitter on a bike and you'll notice it on a run, a hike or the sports field too.
Training for an event or a sport
If you're training for a specific event or sport, your cardio should focus on that activity. Someone training for a 10k should do most of their cardio as running. A footballer should train the way the game asks them to move, with sprints and quick changes of direction.
Training for general health
If your goal is general health, the best cardio is the one you enjoy and can stick to long term. A run, a ride, a swim or a game of sport all do the job.
Train for your goal. If your goal is your health, pick the cardio you enjoy most.
