Strength: What Is Training Volume?

Training volume is the total amount of work your muscles do in a workout.

Volume = Sets × Reps × Weight

More volume doesn't always mean more progress, especially when you're starting out. Building up gradually limits the risk of injury and overtraining.

5–8 hard sets per muscle group, per week, is enough to build muscle size and strength.

The main muscle groups

Chest, shoulders, upper back, lats, biceps, triceps, core, quadriceps, hamstrings and glutes.

Remember

Five to eight hard sets per muscle group a week is plenty to build muscle and strength.

General information, not medical advice. If you've an existing condition or injury, or you're unsure about starting something new, speak to a qualified professional first.
