Environment: Making the Healthy Choice the Easy One

The easier a good habit is to start, the more likely you are to do it. A lot of that comes down to how your surroundings are set up.

Make good habits easy to start

Put the things you want to use where you'll see them first. Put the things you're trying to cut back on somewhere less convenient.

It sounds simple. It works because it takes the decision out of the moment, so you're not weighing things up when you're tired or busy.

The night before

Evenings are where a lot of tomorrow gets decided. Put your training clothes out where you'll trip over them. Make your lunch before you go to bed. When the morning comes, the decision stops being a decision.

Your kitchen

What's in your kitchen decides a lot of your week. Keep fruit where you'll actually see it and the biscuits where you won't. One shop that puts three easy, decent meals in the house makes eating well on a busy night the simple option.

Your phone

Your phone is one of the biggest parts of the modern environment. It's with you from the moment you wake up. Scrolling fills the gaps in your day and the hour before bed.

  • Charge it outside the bedroom.
  • Turn off the notifications you don't need.
  • Keep it out of reach while you eat.
Remember

Let your surroundings do the work, one small change at a time.
